Introduction to Transition and Faith at Grace Church
It is a privilege to serve Grace Episcopal Church as the Interim Rectors during this sacred time of transition for the faith community at Grace. As an Intentional Interim Minister I have been blessed with a formation process that emphasizes the following FIVE characteristics of healthy congregations that I’d like to share with you:1/ As A Healthy Congregation Our Covenant With God is Foremost. We believe that
- we are created in God’s image – both as individuals and as faith communities (Genesis 1:24-27) – and are held in covenant by our God;
- that as the children of God we are accountable to God and each other for all that we do and all that we are (Jn 4:27-38); and
- that our stewardship is a stewardship of faith, first and foremost, and of talent, time, and materials goods as we can manage(1 Cor4:1-5).
2/ As A Healthy Congregation We Embrace Difference While Striving for Genuine Unity as we
- value integrity over sameness (Jn 17:20-24), and accept repentance as growth rather than punishment (2Cor 7:2-13.)
3/ As A Healthy Congregation We Raise Up Leaders Who Challenge Us
- recognizing that Jesus challenges all His disciples (John 21:15-25), and
- recognizing that leaders model challenge (Philippians 3:12-14).
4/ As A Healthy Congregation We Embrace Change While Focusing on Our Strengths
- identifying systemic change as opportunity embodying hope (Genesis 32:1-26), and
- identifying strength as New Life in Christ (Romans 12:2-8).
5/ As A Healthy Congregation We Exchange Conflict for Mission
- managing differences through faith (James 1:2-8), and
- seeking mission through a deepening reliance on God: “Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done…” (The Lord’s Prayer)
I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you... (Jn13:34)
